Green Hydrogen Centre of Specialisation Launch – 26 May 2026
Today, the power of collaboration was on full display as we celebrated the official launch of the Green Hydrogen Centre of Specialisation (GHCoS), proudly hosted at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) within our South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre – SARETEC facility.
This ground-breaking initiative is the brainchild of three of South Africa’s leading Sector Education and Training Authority (SETAs), the Mining Qualification Authority (MQA), Chemical Industries Education and Training Sector Authority (CHIETA), and Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) whose shared vision has brought together three top Western Cape universities, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of the Western Cape, and Stellenbosch University alongside TVET colleges to pioneer a cleaner tomorrow.
The milestone event kicked off with an exclusive guided tour of our cutting-edge SARETEC facility, giving DHET dignitaries, SETA stakeholders, and industry partners a firsthand look at the world-class infrastructure and technology that will power this initiative.
Following the tour, our Vice-Chancellor, Prof Chris Nhlapo, set the stage by warmly welcoming the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Honourable Buti Manamela, together with SETA executives and attending stakeholders.
The Minister then delivered an inspiring keynote address, officially launching the centre and declaring it open for business. To roll out this incredible initiative, CPUT, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), and Stellenbosch University (SU) are joining forces as the core implementing partners.
A massive thank you to the MQA, CHIETA, TETA, DHET, and our fellow implementing partners for choosing CPUT as the launchpad for South Africa’s green revolution.
